Tamaryn ~

If you explore the artist Tamaryn in depth (and what I mean by this is listen to at least one album) you will undoubtedly discover your ears being drawn in by a combination of subtle repetitive drum sequences and demanding guitar rifts all interlaced by Tamaryn's deep dreamy voice whom at times is barely audible.  As the music grows on you, so does an understanding of shoegaze in it's entirety.  Inspired by My Morning Jacket, I give you one of my favorite songs by the New York based group:

Now I will continue studying for finals...

THIS IS GROUND CONTROL

Here in Seattle its been in the twenties and thirties all week. We've got the christmas tree up, I'm cuddled next to the fireplace with a steaming mug of peppermint tea on the coffee table and Gene Autry is on the loud speaker. Its all good. Seems today marks the day we have officially entered holiday season. From here on out its elves, cookies, and The Holiday, naturally. My sister Karin is also flying in tonight from Los Angeles wuhuu

Cyril Hahn metro block

c
If you are going onto the metro, and want to block out everything else going on around you- the guy standing too close to you, the woman yelling at her child, the strange I-dont-know-what in the corner  -this is a good song.

Musically Blending

For the rainy summer's day, here are some tunes. The first two are sort of mashups, both featuring songs I adore.

The first, contains the original Heartbeats, by The Knife. Not anything recent, but still awesome nevertheless.
Maskrosbarn's mix is over a loop from Crash Test Dummies 1993 single Mmm Mmm Mmm, which was the soundtrack to my childhood car rides.
Wandering Star, by Polica is here, because, the previous song flows way too perfectly into it, at around 3:08 Näääk basically becomes Wandering Star, in a good way.

Summer Sweets

The world's healthiest most delicious Banana walnut ice cream: 2 frozen bananas, 1/3 cup of almond/rice milk, and 1 tablespoon of chopped walnuts all into a blender or food processor until the consistency is like slow-churned ice cream.  Taste and enjoy a perfectly healthy guilt-free delicious treat!  (the picture below is not mine.  I just want to show you what it should look like once ready)

Also, Jon Hopkins latest album Immunity is probably the most interesting album we'll hear all year and he does it without any lyrics.  He lets the music itself be the lyrics ;)

Much love xx

This City

Its been a good weekend, balanced out between friends and work. Last night was a relaxed evening spent with friends Asya, Mykal, and Steph.
There were two things that made my head hurt yesterday. First off: laughing so hard as we all sat around the table doing our best impressions of Marilyn Monroe, Vietnamese nail lady, cookie monster, and our plastic surgery face:
"Dr. Dorfman? My jaw line needs rechiseling."
just to name a few. Secondly: It makes me dizzy to wrap my head around the fact that I am in school this summer. Its a bizarre feeling; it definitely feels like summer outside, but I don't have that care free summer feeling that usually goes along with it. Its for a good reason though, right? I hope so, because some vacation time sounds so nice right now. What I'd do to escape to the sands of, well.. anywhere.
This has been on loop. Pretty sure I got it from my music lady Bry

Cocteau Twins

I started listening to the Cocteau Twins again but this time I've noticed a lot more about the music itself that is just so utterly grand I'm not sure I'll even be able to explain it.  They seem to be alarmingly ahead of their time (Late 70's to late 90's) and it's pretty apparent if you compare them to their contemporaries.

Elizabeth Fraser, the lead vocalist, impossibly captures every emotion with a distinct flicker and flutter of her voice.  Not only does it pair flawlessly with the actual instruments, it flows perfectly with your emotions as you listen.  I'd like to say they are a band that grew on me and it took me some time to realize how great they really are.

Although you might have to look up the inaudible lyrics, you might realize that you feel no different about the song:  Pure love.
Not sure about this video, but here is a song that illustrates their perfection:
